As the Cowboys touchdown back in Frisco, Texas today with their first home game tomorrow. The team will see a familiar face in Cooper Rush who will make the start for the Baltimore Ravens. But for this game, there is an opportunity for redemption for Coach Schottenheimer.
Surely you can’t look too much into a preseason game but with some points like the 6 presnap self-inflicted penalties last week need to be cleaned up. The coaching staff looked like it was their first time being in their positions. Which it was.
With Schottenheimer being a first time HC, Klayton Adams a first time OC. You have position coaches who were promoted from college. Really DC Matt Eberflus is the only one with true experience in his role. The staff looked immature, but luckily that one preseason game wasn’t the entire test. They will have an opportunity to clean it all up against Baltimore.
“We got through the installs and then we actually had a couple extra days where we went and did re-red zone emphasis, re-run game emphasis, re-third down, two minute, things like that, so it flowed pretty good.” Schottenheimer said.
We will see everyone that played and coached vs. the Rams get another shot here. But we will be excited to watch Tyler Booker make his rookie debut on Saturday. Booker was the only healthy first round pick that did not play in week one of the preseason.
All reps will be important from here on out. As the team figures out close battles like the WR & TE rooms, and also trying to figure out the starting interior defensive linemen.
Coach Schottenheimer told the media, “there’s still a ton of work to be done, and I think getting back to Frisco and the Star and getting ready to do the things that we need to do and find our flow…”
There will only be three more practices for training camp, including two open practices at The Star for fans to attend. After that the Cowboys will play their final preseason game against Atlanta on the 22nd. The team will get a rest week following as the 53-man roster is finalized.
“The urgency is always high. The urgency doesn’t change,” Schottenheimer said. “We knew this first game against Philly would show up faster than you always think it does, and so we’re not going to be surprised by it.”
We are told that Miles Sanders will be available, and Jaydon Blue is getting closer with his rehab. We aren’t sure who will actually play but will expect to see more Joe Milton and hopefully a better rhythm from the Schottenheimer offense.
