The New York Giants will be keeping Russell Wilson as their starting QB as they head into AT&T Stadium to face the Dallas Cowboys in their home opener. Head Coach Brian Daboll said the loss against the Commanders was on everybody and not just the quarterback.
It is a tricky situation to navigate for New York as they spent a 1st round draft pick on Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart. Seemingly all of the media in NY is begging for the debut of Dart. But Brian Daboll announced that they have confidence in the veteran and will be sticking with Russell Wilson.
The coaching staff will have to navigate the development of Dart but also consider the fact, they may all be on the hot seat. In New York, coaches seem to get to the hot seat rather quickly. Although in 2022, Daboll led the Giants to their first playoff win since 2011. Two consecutive losing seasons has put him in hot water.
Can Russ Still Cook?
Watching the Commanders game, it seems Wilson doesn’t have the big arm that he once did in Seattle. He still has the ability to move around the pocket and pick up yards.
Wilson led the Giants in rushing with eight carries for 44 yards. Four of the eight Wilson runs came when he was under pressure.
The offensive line is the biggest problem for the Giants. The Commanders generated 22 pressures across 45 dropbacks in their Week 1 victory over the Giants, 5 more pressures than the unit recorded in any other game last season.
Andrew Thomas is the star left tackle for New York, he had surgery last October to repair a Lisfranc injury in his foot, he has been working his way back. Missed last week and doesn’t look like he will play Sunday.
Russell Wilson completed just 5 of his 16 passes when pressured for 51 yards, recording a 18.2% success rate under pressure. Former Cowboy, Dorance Armstrong led the Commanders pass rush with 9 pressures, tying a career-high.
Obviously Wilson is not the runner that Jalen Hurts is…but you can’t leave Wilson unmarked or he will convert big plays with his legs.
