Nine games down, eight to go. The Cowboys sit at 3-5-1, and always being a team with high expectations, Dallas is not out of it…but they shouldn’t feel great in their current standing.
The Cowboys always play with high expectations, that’s a reflection on what their fans want, and those views are often supported by the Jones Family. The desire to win a Superbowl and end the “drought” regardless if the Joneses want to call it that or not.
When Brian Schottenheimer took over as a first time head coach, he mentioned the goal to ‘win a world championship’ although the history of 1st year head coaches has indicated that feat isn’t usually achievable in year 1.
The Cowboys have experienced the rocky roads of a new coach, and the defense has definitely struggled. Being rated bottom of the NFL in most categories while the offense has soared. Though their last game at home against Arizona, we saw the offense start going under some turbulence.
Looking ahead, the Cowboys made some moves that will hopefully ‘fix’ the defensive struggles. If it is possible to get that done at just the deadline.
When Dallas takes the field at Allegiant Stadium, they will have big Quinnen Williams as their nose tackle and can coordinate how they want to rush Kenny Clark and Osa Odighizuwa.
DeMarvion Overshown will make his long awaited season debut as he recovered from his knee injury late season. And he will likely line up next to Logan Wilson who will make his Cowboys debut, after being traded from the Bengals.
In the secondary, rookie Shavon Revel Jr will be available and we will see how they work him back out. Caelen Carson has been getting more and more reps.
Beyond the physical reset, the bye also offers a mental one. After dropping back-to-back games, Dallas needs to rediscover its identity on both sides of the ball. The defense must find more consistency, while Dak Prescott and the offense work to regain rhythm and efficiency.
The finish of the Cowboys season is a tough one, and they will be tested very early. Which means we will know early if this team can sneak into the post season.
After the playing in Las Vegas, the Cowboys will host two home games in 4 days, Philadelphia and Kansas City. Seven days later they will play in Detroit, a team that humiliated them in 2024.
