“The Sideline” is an opinion series that reflects my personal observations and analysis. These views are my own and are not affiliated with, nor do they represent, the Dallas Cowboys organization.
The Cowboys sit at 3-3-1 with the number one ranked offense in the NFL. Though it is safe to say the defense has held them back, ranking dead last in multiple categories.
There are trade rumors that are floating around…of course there is, its the Dallas Cowboys, there are always trade rumors (many of which have no ground) floating in our space.
On Tuesday, that was Maxx Crosby. The Cowboys were reportedly ‘interested’ but then the report comes out that they have never talked to the Raiders about this (shocking) and then later its reported by Vegas, that they are not trading Crosby.
While other players have since been floated around. This begs the question.
Do the Cowboys need to make a trade?
In my opinion, the Cowboys have lightning in a bottle with this current offense. Its not like they are a good offense…top 10 in the league…this is the #1 offense in the NFL, outscoring every team individually. Except on Sundays when the defense gives up 40 points to the Cowboys 37.
I have faith the Schotty offense and veteran Dak Prescott can keep consistency over the next few seasons. But in the NFL, nothing is guaranteed, you have to capitalize when you have it.
As far as contracts, Javonte Williams and George Pickens (two main contributors) are not guaranteed to be in Dallas next season. And will they continue their great play?
I think the Cowboys should make some action at the trade deadline, ‘all-in’ as Jerry would say.
What do they need? And how much does it cost?
The Cowboys could use some help with getting more pressure, but they could also use some better linebacker play. And I guess they need a defensive back too…
A problem I have is, I am not sure that the 32nd defense can be saved by one player.
I also don’t think I want to give up multiple first round picks. That’s the part of the conversation that has caused me to hesitate. We just trade away Parsons for two first round picks. Now fans want to trade those two picks for Maxx Crosby?
Why wouldn’t you just pay Micah?
Why were we told by the front office that you don’t need an elite pass rusher to win, you need Kenny Clark to stop the run.
I think if you can get someone for one 1st, that can immediately elevate this defense. Lets do it.
Will They Do It?
Well history tells us they want to take those four 1st round picks to the draft. But they have made that trade in the past. In 2018, the 3-4 Dallas Cowboys made a trade for a desperately needed WR, Amari Cooper, it cost them one 1st.
That team turned into a playoff team and finished 10-6.
