As we approach the most optimistic time of the year, the NFL Draft. The Cowboys are looking to do most of their damage early. Having traded their 2nd and 3rd round picks this year, Dallas will pick twice in the first round (12 & 20), and given their defensive struggles- They need impactful defenders.
The Top of the 2026 NFL Draft
As I begin my research for this year’s draft, it has become evident that this is not the typical year where pick 12 guarantees you an elite prospect. In most years, the draft is flooded with teams valuing quarterbacks and left tackles more than the average position, particularly quarterbacks.
In 2024, there were 6 quarterbacks taken in the top-12. Which naturally pushed top-tier players like Brock Bowers and Jared Verse down the board. This year, you won’t see that. There is no team reaching on Trey Lance at 3 to help an All-Pro fall to you.
What Can Dallas Hope For?
With one QB and only two or three left tackles projected to go in the top-10. Dallas needs to see the names Jordyn Tyson, Carnell Tate, and Makai Lemon go early.
An early wide receiver run would push defenders down to Dallas at 12. Assuming the Cowboys got everything squared away with George Pickens, then you can take WR and DT off the board.
Dane Brugler released his updated top-100 players of the 2026 NFL Draft. Notably for Dallas, he had ranked Carnell Tate (10) and Jordyn Tyson (12) in his top-12.
I think the value of a WR has increased dramatically over the past few seasons, with guys like Jaylen Waddle and Ja’Marr Chase being top picks. Teams are interested in playmakers.
Having these guys and potentially a third off the board could allow for some of the desired names like Sonny Styles or Mansoor Delaine to fall in the Cowboys’ lap.
Guys to Root For Getting Drafted
First, here are a few names that are expected and I think will be gone before the Cowboys get a chance to pick.
- Fernando Mendoza, QB
- Arvell Reese, Edge
- Rueben Bain Jr, Edge
- David Bailey, Edge
- Francis Mauigoa, OT
- Spencer Fanu, OT
- Caleb Downs, SAF
After those names, you have 4 more players that need to go before Dallas gets on the clock. Here are some players who, at the very least, have had some top-12 buzz, but it will take some cheering.
- Jordyn Tyson, WR
- Makai Lemon, WR
- Carnell Tate, WR
- Jeremiyah Love, RB (should be gone…but some fans may want the rb)
- Kadyn Proctor, OT (unless you want to replace Guyton…)
- Caleb Banks, DT
- Vega Ioane, OG
Of course, it is only February, so all things- especially after free agency- can be subject to change.
