“The Sideline” is an opinion series that reflects my personal observations and analysis. These views are my own and are not affiliated with, nor do they represent, the Dallas Cowboys organization.
Despite the endless speculation, George Pickens reported to Cowboys facility on Monday for the veteran physicals, and just as Coach Schottenheimer expected, Pickens showed up and participated in the mandatory workout on Tuesday.
Many speculated what distraction or drama Pickens would cause this offseason. Which can be expected for fans that have dealt with many years of contract problems. As for Pickens, he did sign his franchise tag in late April, meaning he would be fined for a no-show this week.
To me, I wanted to give him the chance to show up for these practices and, more importantly, participate. I am glad no mysterious back strains appeared that would cause him to work out to the side with the trainers.
But to no distraction, Pickens not only showed up to practice, but he also faced the media and made himself available to clear any rumors and hopefully put this situation in the back for the season.

It does not bother me as much that he wanted to skip out on the voluntary workouts; if anything, I always prefer the player to at least be in team meetings over being a part of practice.
Pickens told the media that he defers to his agent to make decisions that are best for his playing future. Calling the agent the “boss” and shifted away from questions regarding whether he believed his agent was correct in advising him to miss voluntary workouts.
Pickens instead focused on telling everyone that he just does as he’s told by his agent. Which I found a little more odd, since technically the agent works for the player and not the other way around. Although to his credit, when you are talking about managing millions of dollars, you have to listen to those you trust if you need the help.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer expressed enthusiasm about his return, noting “that while Pickens will be brought along slowly, participating in individual and mock drills while sitting out team periods…he is in a great headspace and fully committed to the team’s goals.”
There is no long-term concern about him being behind. The coaching staff plans to integrate him steadily, and he will be fully prepared for the upcoming training camp in Oxnard.

Pickens went on to talk about the importance of being there for his teammates and providing support for the younger guys. He’s not as concerned about playing under the franchise tag; he will let his agent and front office handle that.
Pickens is concerned with focusing on his goals and winning a Super Bowl.
